Nathan Haines 2003 ‘Squire For Hire’ that featured the spoken word of Marlena Shaw gets a fresh lick of paint from Dutch duo Fouk.

Released on Chillifunk Records back in 2003, the original version of ‘Squire For Hire’ by New Zealand saxophone player Nathan Haines is a refined, cool jazz sound that was met with a very warm reception from the jazz crowds. Featuring the spoken word of Marlena Shaw and co-written by the late Phil Asher, you already know this is a must listen to.

The 2025 retouch comes from Dutch duo Fouk who have been catching our attention over the last 12 months. Their track ‘Coffee’ from 2024 we actually played in our Café Del Mar set last summer. So we are invested in their releases from the off. But, this remix package is actually well worth of getting hold of. The house rework is cemented with low slung bass lines then freshened in the tops with an added piano line and some cool post effects of the original elements. This one just grooves. There is an instrumental too fro those just wanting to let the music do the talking.

You can get Fouk’s remix of ‘Squire For Hire’ now here.
