Faze Action’s Robin Lee returns under his Andromeda Orchestra guise with the ‘Mythical Dub’ EP on FAR.
Robin Lee, the mastermind behind Andromeda Orchestra and one-half of Faze Action, has long been a purveyor of lush, groove-heavy disco with a deep reverence for both vintage and modern production aesthetics. On Mythical Dub, his latest four-track offering, Lee once again fuses the past and present, delivering a masterclass in jazz-funk-infused disco with a touch of cosmic energy.
At the heart of the EP is Mythical, a sprawling, free-flowing journey into jazz-funk disco, where kaleidoscopic synth melodies weave in and out of dexterous basslines and crisp percussion. The arrangement is dynamic and expansive, allowing each element to breathe while maintaining a propulsive groove. It’s a track that wouldn’t sound out of place in a late ‘70s NYC loft party or a modern-day deep-disco set.
Adding to the experience are two alternative dub versions that showcase Lee’s versatility in reimagining his own material. The Full Motion Dub leans into Italo disco territory, with a driving, arpeggiated bassline and an urgent, hypnotic energy that brings to mind peak-time club moments. In contrast, the Special Dub Mix carries the unmistakable spirit of Larry Levan’s legendary Paradise Garage era, emphasizing space, groove, and deep, percussive textures to create a mesmerizing dancefloor moment.
Rounding out the release is Magic Light Connection, a mid-tempo gem that blends classic disco with early ‘80s jazz-funk influences. With its warm synth pads, fluid basslines, and sparkling keys, it provides a smooth yet vibrant contrast to the heavier-hitting dub variations.
In essence, Mythical Dub is a brilliant showcase of Lee’s ability to craft timeless disco narratives. Whether you’re drawn to its jazz-funk richness, hypnotic dub treatments, or the breezy charm of its bonus cut, this EP is a must for anyone who appreciates the art of dance music with soul.
