Luca Fronza aka Daughters & Sons has readied the ‘Detroit Stories’ EP for a December release on Flexi Cuts, backed by a remix from Prins Thomas.
Italian label Flexi Cuts has a bit of a weapon on their hands with the ‘Detroit Stories’ EP from Daughters & Sons, the moniker of Luca Fronza. The Italian DJ is known for his love of funky grooves and this has led him to land on labels like KFM/Maffia, MòSmog, Functional, Mantra/Expanded and Strictly Groove. Now Fronza joins the Flexi Cuts family who so far have featured the likes of Lego Edit, Delphi, Peter Garbell and many more.
This new EP is based around a series of interview with time-served Detroit-residents, their speech cut up and used skilfully by Luca. Opening track ‘Gypsy’ is an off-kilter groove that sounds like a 60’s Sci-Fi cut in some parts before it slithers back into familiar House territory. Prins Thomas‘ remix of ‘Gypsy’ is next. Growling sub-bass lines, metallic clangs and laid-back, relaxed drum grooves beat away in the distance of the mix. ‘Home’ is our favourite. This filtered, deep house groove speaks about Detroit in all its passion whilst grooving harmoniously with the subject. ‘The People’ is a minimal late-night groove built around hypnotic vocals, erratic synth stabs, sparse percussive hits and latin flavours. A slick dub of ‘Gypsy’ rounds off the EP, in a wonderfully impassioned track that grinds and falls into a suitable groove.
The ‘Detroit Stories’ EP is out on Flexi Cuts is available from December 14th, 2023. Pre order here.
