Our favourite Berliner Black Loops ahead of his upcoming LP ‘Always Moving’ has readied the release of one of it’s tracks ‘Electrical’ that features Marlena Dae.
With a decade-long journey of crafting innovative house grooves, Black Loops has established himself as a mainstay in the global house music scene. Known for his eclectic blend of funk, soul, and disco, all underpinned by 90s house influences, his productions have consistently resonated with both dancefloors and discerning DJs alike. Over the years, standout releases like Higher on Toy Tonics, 7Hills on Pets Recordings, and his collaborations with Grant and Felipe Gordon have cemented his reputation. His EPs on labels such as Shall Not Fade and Neovinyl have been staples in the collections of house aficionados, blending deep, soulful vibes with dancefloor energy. His forthcoming debut album Always Moving, set to drop on May 9th, 2025, is one of the most anticipated house releases of the year, and its lead single Electrical offers a tantalizing glimpse into what lies ahead.
Electrical immediately sets the tone with a punchy, live-sounding drum groove that showcases Black Loops’ background as a drummer. The rhythm section is tight yet loose, exuding an organic funk reminiscent of Metro Area’s classic work. The bassline is a highlight, its rubbery, syncopated flow weaving effortlessly through the percussion and creating a hypnotic drive that anchors the entire track.
Marlena Dae’s vocals are nothing short of captivating. Her voice floats delicately above the groove, echoing the ethereal qualities of artists like Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano and Christine and the Queens. The spaciousness of the production allows her emotive delivery to shine, creating a warm, soulful atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.
The production on Electrical is masterful in its simplicity. Black Loops opts for a stripped-back approach, giving each element ample room to breathe. Subtle chord stabs, gentle pads, and intricate percussion fills add texture without ever overwhelming the mix. It’s a track that thrives on restraint, using minimal elements to maximum effect.
What makes Electrical stand out is its versatility. It’s a track that feels equally at home on a packed dancefloor as it does on a late-night radio show. The groove is infectious, the vocals are hauntingly beautiful, and the overall vibe is one of understated sophistication.
With dub versions from Jimpster and Black Loops himself on the horizon, Electrical is poised to become a staple in DJ sets and playlists alike. It’s a brilliant teaser for Always Moving and a testament to Black Loops’ ever-evolving artistry. Freerange Records has once again delivered a gem that will undoubtedly resonate within the house music community for years to come.
