Hot off the release of their EP ‘Funk Area’, Italians Slowaxx and Ai Lati celebrate with this exclusive DJ set recorded live at Flexi Cuts, Italy.
Slowaxx is both a solo project and live band collective led by Italian musician Riccardo Chiarucci. Following on from his debut LP “Shapes Interfusion’’ that was released back in 2024. Blending jazz, broken beats and machine soul, this juxtaposed sound created by Chiarucci is a breath of fresh air in scene full of predominantly 4/4 beats. For over a decade Ai Lati has been experimenting with beats. From techno to his clever edit of Donovan’s ‘Sunshine Superman’, their is a real love in sound within Lati’s productions.
The ‘Funk Area’ EP is set to be the last release of the year for both Slowaxx and the celebrated Italian label Flexi who celebrate their 24th release. Opening with the title-track, the EP busts into loose swinging grooves deliciously layered with boogie synths and bulbous bass tones, this catchy earworm is addictive. ‘Panatta’ is a kinetically charged, jazz infused number with cool vibraphone melodies, intergalactic whirls, funky wah-infused synth melodies. When the bass begins to pulsate, we know this is the real deal. Michael Byrne’s remix of ‘Funk Area’ is next. This nice alternative brings back a more familiar 4/4 groove using some different re-drumming techniques to bring this track to a dance floor ready state. Italian producer The Mechanical Man rounds of the EP with his deliciously deep remix of ‘Panatta’. It’s all about the low-slung bass lines with their acid stylings and the cavernous organ chords that set the scene for lighter, airy synth pads to playfully bust out in the mid section.
Overall a superb EP from Slowaxx and Ai Lati, we are super gassed to have a exclusive live mix from the pair that was recorded Saturday November 30th, live at the Flexi record store in Lugo, Italy. You can buy the EP now here.
