Tête de la Course & Mandy Jones sit down with KOTT in the wake of current release ‘True’ to talk about their musical inspirations.
Following the resounding success of Tête de la Course‘s debut single, “The Light,” which also marked Drop Dance Society’s First-ever release, the Spanish producer returns with an electrifying deep house anthem. This time, he is joined by the enchanting vocals of American singer Mandy Jones to craft “True” – a spellbinding dancefloor banger.
We talk to the pair about some of their inspirations…
Mandy’s choices…
Sade – Nothing Can Come Between Us
Besides having a bassline and groove so tasty you could eat it, Sade’s soothing voice and sophisticated sound have always inspired me. Memorable lyrics, pure sonic beauty, plus a rhythm that gets me moving every time.
Disclosure – Holding On (feat. Gregory Porter)
Gregory Porter’s voice and Disclosure’s production are inspiration enough for me, but this track in its entirety has lit an absolute fire under me so many times over the years, whether in the gym or studio. The energy is electric, the soundscape is sophisticated, and the vocals are smooth like butter. Delicious.
Cleo Sol – Love Will Lead You There
Vocally, Cleo Sol is as sweet as they come, and captivating with a uniquely strong, but feminine energy. These lyrics are inspirational and the whole track is just shimmering. It has injected me with strength various times.
TOTO – Georgy Porgy
I feel like the first person on earth to have heard this song for the first time in 2023. I fell in LOVE. Something about that piano, the chords, the groove. It’s nostalgic and bittersweet—almost painfully so. I’m inspired by the vocals, songwriting, and addictive melodic lines.
Erykah Badu – On & On
I’ve been a big fan of Erykah for a very long time, but this track goes way back. It’s a big vocal inspiration. She’s the queen of laid back intellectual soul. Of course, it also plays right into my bassline obsession, and who doesn’t love a tight rimshot?
Tête de la Course’s choices
Sandy Rivera, Mike Dunn feat April Morgan – I Won’t Let Go
The Rhodes melody, plus April’s angelic voice.
Louie Vega – All My Love (feat. Robyn)
Infectious groove with just a few instruments, no breakdown, no claps.
Another vision.
KAYTRANADA – Intimidated ft. H.E.R.
I love the Kayrtanada’s drum layering here, how the kick sounds so deep and raw, and the unquantized claps tone.
Omar-S – Start This Over Again
I’ve been a huge fan of Omar S since many years ago.
I love the raw and school touch, especially in this tune.
Leela James – Music
My favorite r&b tune all time.
Inspired me to learn how to make a proper vocal track.
