Denney makes his first mark of the new year with a much-anticipated debut on Sasha’s influential Last Night on Earth.
Denney has long been one of the UK’s most assured house servants. His is a classic tale of rising through the ranks from local North of England legend to internationally renowned artist. He has held key residencies at some of the country’s finest clubs and landed on all the key labels from Crosstown Rebels to REKIDS, Nothing Else Matters to 8Bit Records.
Denney has explained that both tracks on this new EP were made after playing at Get Lost in Miami, adding “that ‘Smoke’ represents the more melodic side of what I do musically and ‘Trojan Dance’ the more driving darker side. Before this EP was signed, I’d sent Sasha countless demos over the years – probably more than any other label, so it’s a big personal goal to be releasing with LNOE and I’m buzzing to get these out as my first release of 2024.”
Opener ‘Smoke’ is a lively house cut with plenty of bounce in the drums and lots of dynamic toms peppering the groove. What lights it up though are the flashes of synth and cascading arps that bring cosmic colour and otherworldly atmosphere to the track. They grow ever more intense, making for an enthralling dancefloor trip. ‘Trojan Dance’ is just as fresh but is one to get heads down and feet marching: the moody grooves are low-slung with dusty hi-hats cutting up the beats and laser-like synths searching across the face of the track. It’s the sound of an escapist late-night trip through a mystic jungle with a brilliantly weighty bassline.
