Veteran producer Angel Johnson returns with vocalist Hannah Khemoh for a soulful House rendition of Zero 7’s ‘Destiny’.
Self-taught producer and DJ Angel Johnson is a name heralded throughout the country in every 90’s House music conversation. The once resident of famed hotspot ‘Venus’, Johnson carved out a solid career throughout the 90’s appearing at the likes of Ministry Of Sound, Sugar Shack, the Hacienda, Pacha Ibiza, the Gallery, the Cross and the Chuff Chuff parties.
As a producer Johnson has been prolific over the decades. Releases on Seamless, motion, Ocata Records and Lapsus are just some of the highlights as well as Angels’ other project Venus In Motion which is her more creative moniker that see’s the Nottingham-born artist delve deeper into her organic sound.
This new release ‘Destiny’ see’s Angel rejoin with Hannah Khemoh following on from their 2023 release on Ocata. Hannah is a big favourite of the likes of DJ Spen and has a slew of releases on many labels including Atjazz, Quantize and the label were speaking of today, the infamous NYC icon Nervous Records.
‘Destiny’ is a cover of the classic 2001 Zero 7 track that stole the hearts of many Balearic lovers. The silky, soulful House rendition is a fluid 4/4 groove with skipping percussion, diminished piano chords and a classic old school M1 sounding organ synth. Hannah’s vocal is touching, stirring even. A perfect juxtaposition from the original vocal, this deeply felt performance drives home the quality of this full-grown release.
